Double Chain Cast-On

Step 1

Make a slip knot and place it on the LH needle. This knot does not count as a stitch.

Step 2

Hold the crochet hook below and perpendicular to the LH needle so that the needle and the hook form a cross. Make sure the working yarn is behind the hook.

Step 3

Wrap the yarn around the needle clockwise, exiting to the back between the needle and the hook. Then wrap the yarn around the hook counterclockwise, also exiting to the back between the needle and hook. (Similar to making a figure of eight)

Step 4

With the hook, pull the yarn through under both legs of the loop on the needle. (1 stitch cast on; 1 twisted loop on hook)

Step 5

Rotate the hook counterclockwise to untwist the loop on the hook.

Step 6

Slightly tighten, return to the initial hook-needle position, and bring the yarn to the back between the needles.

Step 7

Wrap the yarn as described in Step 3.

Step 8

With the hook, pull the yarn through under both legs of the loop on the needle, then pull through the loop on the hook. (1 stitch cast on; 1 twisted loop on hook)

Repeat Steps 5 to 8 until one stitch short of the desired number of cast on stitches.

Next Step

Rotate the hook to untwist the loop, then transfer the loop onto the needle, with the right leg in front, oriented to be knitted.
