The Loreley rock in the Rhine shore is said to be home to a beautiful siren whose song distracts sailors and causes them to crash on the rocks below. While knitting the ample triangle shawl Loreley by Melanie Berg, you can lose yourself -safely, as the designer emphasizes- in the seductive repetition of the geometric lace pattern. The lace reminds her of the stony face of its namesake, while the Moods colours Reed and Pistachio of our Lovely Merino Treat are reminiscent of a gentle river edged by a sandy shoreline.

You start knitting the shawl body bottom-up, following either the written instructions or the charts for the lace pattern. You then pick up stitches along the bottom edges for the different-coloured border and knit it in the easy garter stitch.

The finished shawl is approx. 210 cm (82.5 in) wide and 80 cm (31.5 in) from top to bottom after blocking.

You will need 4 skeins of Lovely Merino Treat: 3 skeins in colour A (299 gi) and 1 skein in colour B (71 g). The indicated yarn quantities apply according to the gauge.

The garment in the images is knitted with the colours Reed (A) and Pistachio (B).

Needles:

  • 3.75 mm (US 5) circular needle
  • 2 cable needles

Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.
